Mesilla Valley Dance Collective is bringing a creative and collaborative dance festival to the Black Box Theater on February 16th and 17th, 2017. The Scarab Thief is a family-friendly show about friendship, adventure, and sacrifice inspired by story elements of the classic ballet, The Pharoah's Daughter. Follow the adventures of an archeologist who, caught up in a windstorm in the deserts of Egypt, takes refuge in an ancient tomb full of riches, and a new friend who will take her on an adventure from the banks of the Nile River, through an ancient Egyptian court, and even to the grand scales of the Book of the Dead. Original choreography by the members of Mesilla Valley Dance Collective tell a story through genres of dance ranging from classical ballet, to modern dance, as well as saber twirling and live vocal performances.
The idea for this show was decided upon by all of the members of the Mesilla Valley Dance Collective. This is the first show that is made up of entirely new choreography from the members and guest choreographers, and dancers. The members started by looking at the original story-line of The Pharaoh's Daughter then adapted it to the abilities and talents of all of the members. Each member was able to contribute to the creative process to bring the concept to completion.
This show has been collaboratively created and choreographed by the Mesilla Valley Dance Collective members. We are joined by Human Nature Contemporary Ballet from El Paso and Tularosa Basin Dance Collective from Alamogordo this year.

Mesilla Valley Dance Collective seeks to provide opportunities for dancers of all skill levels, backgrounds, and abilities, as well as individuals who are simply creative and want an outlet to dance and work collaboratively with others with similar passions. They are primarily focused on crafting a single creative theatrical production once a year that explores a theme or narrative that the members collectively agree on. These productions are highly collaborative in nature, with every member having a voice in their creation, by contributing original choreography, costuming, and more. They also work to create a smaller show once a year to showcase dance in the borderland area. Ages and skill levels of the dancers in the collective vary greatly, with members in their teens, twenties, and thirties, and members who have been dancing since the age of 3, with college degrees in dance, to members who found their passion for dance as recently as 3 years ago.
