Director's Note

I read the 2003 book first and was blown away. “A stunningly good read” wrote The Independent, continuing, “By some distance the oddest and most original narrator to appear in years.” The book won the Whitbread Book of the Year award. The book was adapted into a play with a successful run in London, New York and then regional theatres. We saw the London production and found it interesting, though we were put off by the excessive use of technology, which, in our opinion, took away from Christopher’s engaging story. The author has said that Christopher is not modeled after a particular type of autism. He is simply different.

The notes in the script state “The scenes run into one another without interruptions regardless of alterations in space or time or technology.” We found this to be a challenge and owe great thanks to designer Peter Herman for his accurate slide representation of the many scenes of the play. The multiple roles played by the voices are realized by the very talented team of actors and aided by Lana Eckman’s costume designs. Many thanks to everyone involved in this production. Hopefully we ticked off all the boxes and produced a show which is as enjoyable to you, our audiences, as it was to us working on it.
